Inspection

Inspection is usually the first step in any investigation; however it offers a wealth of possibilities.

It is not always possible to undertake laboratory analysis of a failure due to logistics, however on site inspection can often suffice when determining the problem and finding a solution.

Non-destructive testing and examination (NDT/E) can be used to confirm the success of repairs, track the development of long term deterioration and locate defects deep within a material that could cause catastrophic failures. We undertake designing and managing of NDT schedules and we also have experience of remote monitoring systems as Materials Technology believes that any investigation should be as non-invasive as possible.

Our engineers are available to travel around the world for on site inspection work. All of our inspection work is covered by a clear technical report detailing our findings and providing you with clear recommendations or remedial actions. In some cases we may recommend that samples are necessary for more detailed analysis. These can be supervised at the time of inspection.

The cases below show some of the types of inspection work we have been involved in.

Wind Turbine Inspection

The wind turbine market is very dynamic and rapidly evolving. We developed a remote mini camera monitoring system for monitoring deflections on the tip brakes at the ends of 31m long blades.

Remote Positive Materials Identification

Remote positive materilas identification on a high temperature plant can allow the location of embrittling phases in alloys permitting early warning of potential failures (see for example the welding case history). We have worked on a collaborative EU project developing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for this application.

Varnish Inspection on Super Yacht

Whilst undergoing a multi million pound refit this super yacht experienced quality problems with its interior varnish finish. Our engineers were in a position to conduct a full on site inspection in the German dockyard and identify the root cause and propose remedial action.
